My Brother’s Keeper – Tulsa, the local affiliate of former president Barack Obama’s foundation, announced its activities and event sponsorships completed in June and planned for July. BerThaddaeus Bailey is managing director of My Brother’s Keeper – Tulsa.
The non-profit organization hosted a Peer Learning Call Panel. The community discussions highlighted its partnership with Tulsa Public Schools and other MBK Model Communities, including Newark, Omaha, and Yonkers (N.Y.). The participants shared insights from MBK-Tulsa’s Pre-K enrollment campaign and plans for a relaunch in the fall.
Secondly, the group sponsored a Life Skills and Drills Football Camp. The kindergarten through fifth grade student athletes learned lessons for both on and off the field. Former Dallas Cowboys Felix Jones visited with the students. The camp was held at the Salvation Army North Mabee Boys and Girls Club.
Thirdly, since May, the Books in Barbershop has enrolled approximately 40 students. While getting a haircut, Pre-K to third graders have been enrolled and have participated in reading books. A raffle is held each month to recognize the elementary school participants for reaching the milestone of reading while in the barbershop.
On July 25, MBK-Tulsa will host a Progress Monitoring Session. Members will share strategies and reports on their achievements and accomplishments. Additionally, the program will be a networking opportunity for participants.
