She was born in Bluff, Oklahoma on April 17, 1939 to Eugene and Celester Petty. She was the second of five children. She was a member of the Greater Union Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in 1957, Vernetta attended Langston University in Langston, OK graduating in 1961 with a B.S. in Education. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Predeceased by her father and mother, Vernetta is survived by her devoted husband, Ted, of 60 years; a daughter Denise (David) Williams, and two sons, Ted Roland and Derrick Nijel (Marva). Her grandchildren include: Mikhaila, India, Amaya,
Joshua, Laila, Cairo and Garvey; three brothers, Leon (Susan) Petty, Paul (Louise) Petty, and Ronald (Donna) Petty, and a sister Luberta (Wilson) Brewer. Other survivors include nephews, nieces and friends.
~A Public Viewing will be held on Friday, February 3, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Jack’s Memory Chapel.
~ Delta Sigma Theta Ceremony: Friday, February 3, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with Family Greeting of Guest: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
~The Pre-Funeral Viewing will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Greater Union Baptist Church, 955 E 36th St. N, Tulsa, OK 74106.
~Interment Immediately following at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, 12410 N Yale Avenue, Skiatook, OK 74070.
