Mothers living in zip codes 74126 and 74106 now have legal services available to them at no cost. The George Kaiser Family Foundation and the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation have funded the new non-profit law office.
Still She Rises, Tulsa is a Project of the non-profit Bronx Defenders, a New York City based agency that “provides innovative, holistic, and client-centered criminal defense, family law, civil legal services, social work support and advocacy to indigent people of the Bronx.”
Robin Steinberg, the founder and executive director of Still She Rises, Tulsa, is also the Executive Director of The Bronx Defenders.
The Office Team
For this project, the office team totals 11 people, of whom six will be functioning as lawyers, three as advocates, one as the executive director, and one director’s assistant. Nine of the 11 hold a Juris Doctorate. The team is black, white, Jewish, and Hispanic and fluent in English and Spanish.
The Demographics
According to Camilo Ramirez, Director of Communication at The Bronx Defenders, this project has been in the works for a year and when asked, “Why Tulsa north?” he said these demographics were chosen because Tulsa north in general, and these two zip codes in particular “…has the greatest need.” Steinberg was not available for comment.
Opening Day
Beginning January 9, open-door community intake services will be available to walk-in clients Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 567 East 36th Street North, in Tulsa. At that time, they will also be taking referrals from jails. The official opening, however, will be January 29.
