The high school was chosen in 1973 to be the vehicle for Tulsa’s school desegregation program. The Booker T. Washington Distinguished Hall of Fame Foundation has announced it is accepting nominations for the 2025 Hall of Fame.
BTWDHOF was reestablished at the beginning of the 1996-1997 school year as a function of the administration of the school.
This was the beginning of recognition of outstanding alumni. The BTWDHOF began awarding college scholarships to seniors during the 2011 – 2012 year. In the 2012 – 2013 school year, it became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and became the “Booker T. Washington Distinguished Hall of Fame Foundation.”
The purpose of the Booker T. Washington High School Distinguished Hall of Fame Foundation is to identify and honor graduates, retired faculty and administrators, and patrons of the high school who have exhibited high qualities of leadership, attained high levels of achievement, or made meritorious contributions to the school, local, national, or global communities.
As of 2024, the foundation has awarded 28 seniors with four-year scholarships and nine with one-year scholarships. Ninety-six alumni, faculty, and administrators have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, including Dr. Julia Hare, Dr. Benny Bankston, Carrie B. Neely, Judge Mark Barcus, Nellie Jones, Abraham Harold Fields.
According to a foundation representative, the organization will continue the tradition of providing scholarships and honoring individuals with inductions. Additional activities will include soliciting donations and hosting fundraising events.
The Board of Directors will seek the most qualified seniors for scholarships and select the honorees to be recognized at a dinner program.
Other announcements include a brick paver sale. The community is invited to attend Homecoming on Oct. 4 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., where a foundation booth will be sharing information.
