Modern Woodmen Of America Hosts 10th Annual Hometown Hero

Mary P. Walker Honored

 

The Modern Woodsmen of America Financial Organization located in the historical Greenwood Area hosted its 10th Annual Hometown Hero Luncheon on Friday, February 14, 2020 at the Greenwood Cultural Center.  The Greenwood Branch of Modern Woodmen of America is managed by Mrs. Emily Harris, FICF, LUTC and is in suite 401, 130 N Greenwood Avenue, Tulsa, Ok 74120.

The 2020 Honoree is Mrs. Mary P. Walker Community Activist, Servant and Friend.  Mrs. Walker is a graduate of Langston University/Bachelors and Northeastern State University/master’s in education. Mrs. Walker is a retired educator having spent over 37 years at Tulsa Community College where she served as Associate Dean of Communications, Life Member of Sigma Gamma Rho, Life Member of the Rudisill Friends of the Library, Volunteer of the Resonance Prison Project, first African American president of the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women, past member of the Tulsa Women’s Foundation, active member of First Baptist North and a friend and developer of women and girls in the community.

The Mistress of Ceremony was Mrs. Alnetta Morris, Co-Founder and Curriculum Coordinator of Solid Foundation School, Music was rendered by Ms. Renée Peterson and Mr. Caesar Latimer Jr. of First Baptist North, Grace by Deacon Darrell Walker, Poem by Barbara Eikner Thompson and special words of love from friends, Mrs. Kathy Bracy and Mrs. Marcene Mackey. The luncheon was catered by Tim Allen.

Senator Kevin Matthews and State Representative Regina Goodwin presented special citations from the state of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Black Caucus, and the Oklahoma Senate Democratic Caucus.

Emily Harris made the presentation on behalf of Modern Woodsmen of America and shared to the full house that Mary P. Walker has the spiritual gift of hospitality.

Mrs. Walker, in accepting the honor reminded the group of her teenage years and those women who encouraged her and ensured with a wrinkle five-dollar bill and prayers for her to keep pressing forward. She gives credit to her circle of support and the Holy Spirit.

Modern Woodmen of America is the nation’s third-largest fraternal benefit society in terms of assets. Fraternalism is a unique combination of business and giving back to those we serve – a continuous cycle of positive impact. This organization is owned by its members and provide financial guidance and investment opportunities.
