TALK OF GREENWOOD

Inspire Expressions Media announces its sponsorship of “Keepin’ It REEL: Truth 2 Screen,” an innovative youth film camp designed to empower young storytellers through the art of documentary filmmaking.

The camp will officially kick off Black History Month on Feb. 1 at the former Black Wall Street Art Gallery, 101 N. Greenwood Ave., where students ages 10 to 18 will begin their journey of learning, collaboration, and creative expression under talented Emmy-winning filmmakers. The program will continue through Feb. 22.

This documentary-focused spin-off of the successful “Keepin’ It REEL: Script 2 Screen” camp will assign students to film production teams, each responsible for producing a short documentary by the end of the course. The program will teach technical filmmaking skills and emphasize storytelling’s power in highlighting  underrepresented voices.

“In a time when underrepresented voices are often silenced, we are teaching these young filmmakers that their stories matter,” said Dr. Tamecca Rogers, director of Inspire Expressions Media. “Through the power of documentary filmmaking, they will learn how to amplify voices, capture real experiences, and preserve history for future generations.”

Throughout the camp, students will receive hands-on training in cinematography, directing, lighting, interviewing, and storytelling while filming on location. By the end of the workshop, each team will have completed a professional-quality short documentary, which will be entered into film festivals nationwide.

Students will produce two short documentaries:

“Breaking Barriers: East Central’s Historic Flag Football Victory” – This film captures the journey of East Central’s girls’ flag football team, showcasing their historic achievements and the growing opportunities for young women in sports.

“We R One” – This documentary explores the power of unity in sports and beyond. It highlights how athletes come together regardless of background, building resilience, leadership, and teamwork that extends far beyond the game.

Below is the filming schedule for each production:

“Breaking Barriers: East Central’s Historic Flag Football Victory”Filming Schedule
