TALK OF GREENWOOD

The Claremore Museum of History will be hosting its Juneteenth celebration on June 15. The keynote address will be delivered by legendary Jackson Five member Tito Jackson. Jackson is a new resident of the Claremore area.

Jackson will share his insight on the significance of Juneteenth and its powerful symbol of freedom and resilience for the African American community. He will also reveal his personal connection to the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre through his late uncle, Samuel Jackson, founder of Jack’s Memory Chapel.

The program will be hosted by former Miss Oklahoma Daneka Allen, and Rev. Kendrick Oakley, pastor of Destiny Life Church, will moderate the discussion.

Additional sponsors of the Juneteenth program are Claremore First and Destiny Life Church.

The program will begin at 1 p.m. at the John Smith Gymnasium, 121 N. Weenonah Ave. A reception will follow at the Claremore Museum of History. The event is free to the public.

Claremore Museum of History

Since 2011, the Claremore Museum of History has included a collection of the city’s rich history. The collections and exhibitions highlight humanistic topics and interpretations and provide outstanding museum experiences through educational programs and community collaborations. Among its Black history collection, the museum has memorabilia from Lincoln High School, the city’s all-Black school that was open for more than 50 years prior to integration, in addition to other significant artifacts.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free, and donations, which support the museum, are welcomed.
