The HIstoric Big 10 Ballroom will host its first New Year’s Eve event since the historic venue’s renovation. Once known for being a major music venue on the Chitlin’ Circuit in the 50’s and 60’s, the Big 10 Ballroom fell into disrepair. Dr. Lester Shaw, Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit A Pocket Full Of Hope, Inc. and his wife, Dr. Brenda Shaw, worked for fifteen years to renovate the building so it could serve as the home for the nonprofit organization, which has been working with Tulsa and surrounding communities’ youth for more than 23 years. Attending this New Year’s Eve event will support the nonprofit’s programming.
In its heyday, the HIstoric Big 10 Ballroom served as a safe place for African Americans to perform. Greats such as Ray Charles, James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, the Temptations and many more graced the stage of the Big 10. For New Years Eve, Tulsa’s own Valarie Harding of NBC’s The Voice, will perform. Comedian Sondra Slade and Tulsa artist JFriday will also perform at the event.
