While the search for justice in the 1921 Race Massacre continues in a local cemetery, Black Lives Matter leaders are calling on the city of Tulsa to honor the fight for justice in the modern-day.

Reverend Mareo Johnson has created a petition that calls for the stretch of Peoria between Pine and 56th street north to be given the honorary name “Black Lives Matter Street”. Johnson says the name would not replace Peoria, but would be another name for the area and labeled as such on stoplights and street signs. Johnson says the gesture would mean a lot to black Tulsans, coming from a white mayor.

“When we think of honorary street names, it’s about people or groups that have been very influential in the community or in life period. Black Lives Matter having an honorary street name here in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the north community, I feel very positive about that happening,” said Johnson.

Johnson says the petition has already been sent to the city, but if you would like to add your name, you can click here to sign.
