The Tulsa Indian Coalition Against Racism (TICAR) will hold a peaceful rally before the Union School Board discusses their plans to review the school’s mascot in what would be a historic event in Oklahoma sports. While not the first to voluntarily drop its controversial native American mascot, Union remains the most visible school using what many consider the most offensive mascot, the Redskin. TICAR plans to gather across the street from Union Board of Education building, 8506 E. 61st. Street, Tulsa, OK starting at 6:30 pm and will begin the march at 6:45 pm. The school board is set to begin at 7 pm.
TICAR has been involved in the effort to remove the Union mascot and others across the state since 2002. TICAR submitted an amicus brief in the trademark lawsuit against the Washington Redskins which has also announced plans to review their Redskin mascot. The Cleveland Indians have also announced plans to review their mascot the Indians. The recent energy to challenge racist images and statues began with the tragic murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis, MN policemen. National protest has been held every day since that incident as the United States addresses the national problem with racism. TICAR is grateful for the courageous support of the Chief of the Cherokee Nation Chuck Hoskin Jr., and Muscogee Creek Nation Chief David Hill.
