Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led thousands of federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed.
Organizers of this year’s Juneteenth Celebration: Tulsa’s Demand for Justice announces that Rev. Al Sharpton, will be the headline speaker. The Celebration will be held, this Friday, June 19 outdoors on historic Greenwood Avenue, 700 N. Greenwood Ave, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74106.
The event is scheduled to begin at 11 AM and end at 10 PM, with the Demand for Justice Call at 6PM. This year’s event will commemorate the rich cultural legacy and resilience of Greenwood, aka Black Wall Street, while shining a light on the systemic inequity and racial injustices that persist today. Friday’s event will feature local and national speakers, musical performances, live podcasts, a dedication ceremony and so much more…
