The Oklahoma Eagle Newswire

Sen. Kevin Matthews will host an exploratory African American Fire Service Leadership Summit in Tulsa this weekend. Matthews, D-Tulsa, said the goal is to showcase the city to black fire department chiefs in hopes of bringing their groups to Tulsa during the 1921 Race Massacre Centennial.

“The first African American woman Fire Chief in America, Chief Rosemary Cloud, will be here along with current and past International Association of Black Professional Firefighters presidents,” Matthews said.

Others attending will include president and board members of the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute, which develops fire service leaders worldwide.

“We want citizens through Tulsa to see this level of ‘Black Excellence’ and we want this group of outstanding public servants to see Tulsa,” Mathews said.  “We hope that after they see the great things Tulsa has to offer, they will choose Tulsa for their next conference.”
