Christian Ministers Alliance to give 20 student scholarships
Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the Saving Our Kids annual banquet on July 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel – Downtown, 616 W. 7th St. Master of Ceremonies will be former St. Rep. Dan Sullivan. Sullivan is CEO of the Grand River Dam Authority. Awards will be given to honor individuals in the community. The individual tickets are $100/person.
The CMA is raising money to build the Rev. A. D. Phillips and Pete Theban Youth Center. Phillips was the former pastor of Mt. Rose Baptist Church for 51 years. Theban was the former principal of Marquette Catholic School.
On Sunday, CMA will host its annual scholarship program at Varick Chapel AME Zion Church, 2716 N. Yorktown. The program will begin at 6 p.m. The guest speaker will be Jerry Goodwin, a college professor at Tulsa Community College and a communications executive with Morton Comprehensive Health Services, working with both organizations for nearly 20 years. At the event, twenty (20) scholarships will be given to area high school and college students for academic achievement.
Sponsors of the Christian Ministers Alliance programs are the following: Saving Our Kids Executive Board (Savings Our Kids only), Black Firefighters Association of Tulsa, Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, Martin Luther King Commemoration Society, and the NAACP-Tulsa Chapter among others.
The CMA, founded in 1968, sponsors programs during the year for Easter, Back-to-School, Thanksgiving and Christmas and a variety of education-focused, faith-based and community-based events. The founders of the organization were Rev. John Anderson, Rev. Alphonso Edwards, Rev. John Gilkey, Rev. W. T. Lauderdale, Bishop James Phillips, Rev. Wilson Pike and Rev. L.L. Tisdale.
