Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19,1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger, rode into Galveston, Texas with news the war had ended and the slaves in Texas were now free. Celebrated in June, Juneteenth is a great cultural celebration that takes place in many cities across the nation and has been celebrated in Tulsa for over 20 years.
We anticipate a well-attended event and invite you to be a part of this unique celebration of heritage, music, art, and community.
