A group of north Tulsa business owners and community leaders on Thursday announced the creation of a new organization to help attract new businesses to the area and expand existing ones.
The Black Wall Street Chamber of Commerce will fill a void that has been created in part by troubles surrounding operations at the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, officials said.
Sherry Gamble-Smith, who once led the Greenwood Chamber, will be the CEO and president of the Black Wall Street Chamber of Commerce.
Speaking at a news conference at the Church of the Restoration, Gamble-Smith said she was honored to lead the new group.
“Through our values, we will help businesses grow because we are inclusive, professional, honest, innovative and accountable,” she said.
Melvin Gilliam will serve as chairman of the chamber’s nine-member board.
“As we positively look forward to the future, we want the community to know that it is our mission to create and build the quality of life and business opportunities for the African-American community and north Tulsa through business education, African-American cultural values, legislative advocacy, and economic development,” Gilliam said.
