While the Oklahoma 6A-1 high school football playoffs features two teams, Owasso and Union, who played each other early on in the season, that’s not the case for the finalists in 6A-2. Bixby and Booker T. Washington will play for the state championship on December 1st at 7:00pm CT, just 4 games removed from their meeting on October 27th (seen on Yurview) in which the Hornets clinched the District Title.
How They Got Here
While both teams cruised relatively easily in their opening round games, Bixby faced a much tougher test in their semifinal matchup. After a 41-14 first win over Stillwater, they squeaked by Midwest City 14-12 to advance to the championship game for the fourth straight season. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the Spartans defense had to stop a two-point conversion with just under six minutes left to keep their lead and eventually move on. After starting 1-3 this season, they’ve now won seven of their last eight games.
Bixby is on their way to a 4th State Championship! Big win over Midwest City 14-12!!
Congratulations to our guys. Big win tonight over Lawton 50-12. Next up final game vs. Bixby for the gold ball. #GoldBallChasin#WeAreBookerT
About the Last Meeting
It was Washington’s defense who did all the heavy lifting against Bixby in their first go-round, shutting them out in a game in which the Hornets offense didn’t put up huge numbers. DeWayne Cooks Jr. had two touchdown receptions, including one where he re-created the catch-and-run against the Denver Broncos by former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dante Hall (the original human joystick). against the Denver Broncos.
Players to Watch
WR DeWayne Cooks Jr. – Booker T. Washington
It’s still hard to believe how many guys he can make miss when he gets the ball in space.
WR/DB Brennan Presley – Bixby
He had a 17 yard touchdown catch in the semifinals, and he had an interception against Washington on October 27th.
RB Thomas Grayson – Booker T. Washington
It will be hard for Bixby to stop him, but limiting the number of big plays he gets will be key.
He’ll need to get on track for Bixby to have a chance, as they only had 26 rushing yards in the teams’ first meeting.
LB Coby Tillman – Bixby
He has over 500 career tackles, and he’ll need to be a major factor stopping whoever has the ball for the Hornets.
This game is a part of the “2017 Oklahoma High School Football Playoff Brackets: OSSAA – Class 6A-II” tournament.
