Oklahoma Eagle Newswire

Three public workshops are scheduled for Tulsans to learn about and comment on the Peoria Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, which will provide faster and more frequent service with enhanced vehicles, stations and rider amenities. Participants can review and discuss potential routing and station location options.

The workshops will be held Tuesday, April 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. simultaneously at two locations: Spirit Life Church, 5345 S. Peoria Ave.; and Rudisill Regional Library, 1520 N. Hartford Ave. A third workshop will be held Wednesday, April 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Central Center at Centennial Park, 1028 E. Sixth St. Presentations at the workshops will be identical.

The Peoria Bus Rapid Transit Route will mostly follow the current Tulsa Transit Route 105, the most heavily traveled route in the city. The route is planned to run primarily on Peoria Avenue, between East 63 rd Street North and the intersection of East 81 st Street and South Lewis Avenue.

The project is in the preliminary design phase. Proposed work includes enhanced BRT station platforms, shelters and markers. Another series of workshops will be held in summer 2017 to review and discuss BRT branding, station architecture and amenities.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2018, with the new system opening in spring 2019. Funding to build the Peoria Bus Rapid Transit project has come from the 2014 Third Penny Sales Tax (Improve Our Tulsa); operating costs will be funded by the 2017 Vision Tulsa sales tax.
