Booker T. Washington’s high school wrestling program would disappear in 2017-18 if recommended Tulsa Public Schools athletic department cuts are approved.
The cuts are part of a larger district-wide reduction package as TPS tries to cope with a projected $12 million reduction in state funding for the next school year.
Most of the district’s high schools would lose a substantial number of low-participation varsity sports, and 10 of the 11 middle schools would be merged into multi-school programs, meaning six middle school programs across the city.
The changes are subject to school board approval in May. The TPS unveiled the overall package and heard comments from patrons during a special board meeting Wednesday.
