Teaching, as defined by the Urban dictionary, states, “Provider of knowledge and insight, a mentor. One who inspires, motivates and opens up minds to the endless possibilities of which one can achieve, one who makes a positive difference in the lives of many, one who is admired, appreciated and held in the highest esteem”.
Teachers plant seeds that last forever. Nicolle Powell is planting seeds at Gilcrease Elementary School. She is the 2016/17 Teacher of the Year. Nicole Powell simply loves children – especially all 36 of her special education students at Gilcrease.
When you visit Nicole Powell’s Facebook page, you find a quote that defines teaching in North Tulsa. It reads, “Education is the most powerful tool that you can use to change the world – Nelson Mandela”.
Ms. Nicole Powell has been a teacher at Gilcrease for the past 5 years. She graduated from Texas State University, and has her masters in Reading from Oklahoma State University. In addition to teaching her first through fourth grade students, she is also the Student Council Advisor and coaches soccer. One day, she hopes to open her own school.
Nicole states, “It is an absolute honor to be named Gilcrease Elementary Teacher of the Year, home of the World Changers! I believe I work alongside some of the best teachers, students, and families around, and I could not be more thrilled to represent this community. I am so grateful to have a place where I am challenged, inspired, and make a difference each day.”
